What to expect

A spray tan is one of the quickest ways to achieve a radiant, sun-kissed glow, but the key to flawless results lies in preparation, patience, and proper aftercare. 

It is a good idea to arrive a few minutes early for your first tan. You can ask any questions and we can talk about what kind of tan you are looking for. A spray tan typically lasts between 7 to 10 days, depending on skin type, aftercare, and daily activities.

How they work

By using a solution containing dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a sugar-based compound that reacts with the amino acids in the outer layer of your skin to produce a temporary darkening effect. This reaction is similar to how apples turn brown when exposed to air. The DHA itself is colorless, but a cosmetic bronzer is often added to the solution to help the technician see where they've sprayed and to give an immediate, temporary tan while the DHA develops. 

During your appointment

You will undress to your level of comfort. Just keep in mind that whatever you wear will create the “tan lines” for your spray tan and those items will also receive a coat of the airbrush solution (it’ll wash right out).

Your technician will: 

✓ Set up the equipment in a suitable space. 
✓ Provide barrier cream for areas like elbows, knees and ankles. 
✓ Guide you through simple body positions for even application. 
✓ Go through aftercare instructions to get you the most out of your tan.

How long does a spray tan last?

Spray tan appointments last 20 minutes. This includes the consultation, colour mixing, tan application, and time to dress. The tanning process itself only takes about 10 minutes. 

Your results will last anywhere from 7 - 10 days, based on skin type and lifestyle.

Does a spray tan protect me from the sun?

No. A spray tan does not protect you from the sun. It is recommended that you use sunscreen when out in the sun. 

What if I forget to shave before my appointment?

If you forget to shave before a spray tan, it’s not the end of the world. Shaving after a tan WILL remove some color but if you wait 48 hours after the tan, you’ll remove less color.

Avoid shaving within the first 24 hours after your tan (when you’ll lose the most color if you shave) and definitely don’t “panic shave” right before you come in. Waiting 48 hours after your tan is the best route to take.

Industry secret: Shaving with a new razor and using hair conditioner as your shaving cream will also help preserve the color. 

Should I exfoliate before my appointment?

DO NOT EXFOLIATE DAY OF TAN! This might sound like a good idea, but it’s a very bad one. Don’t do it. When your skin is so fresh post-exfoliation, it won’t be able to hold on to the tan. 

How long does the tan take to develop?

Based on the solution that was used, showering occurs either 1 - 6 hours after application or 8 - 12 hours after application.

Your skin may appear lighter than expected at first, but the tan will continue to develop even after shower over the next 12-24 hours.

What do I need to know about showering?

We recommend you shower at the exact time your technician suggests to ensure you get the best results. Based on the solution that was used, showering occurs either 1 - 6 hours after application or 8 - 12 hours after application.

The water will run brown in the first rinse —this is completely normal! It’s just the temporary bronzing solution washing away 

Stick to lukewarm water—hot showers can cause the tan to fade unevenly. 

Avoid using soaps, body washes, or scrubs during this first rinse to prevent interfering with the tan’s development. 

What do I do if there's a problem with my tan?

How to fix your tan depends on when in the life of the tan you're experiencing issues. You can always call/email us for tailored advice, but here are some general rules: 

Right after the tan: Circular motion during your first post-tan shower will blend out 90% of issues, but it has to be the first shower. 

For a fading tan: The best approach is to remove the spray tan. 

SOS patchiness: If you don’t have time to remove the tan, throw a little cosmetic bronzer on to help blend the patchy area. 

If you want to do a mask or peel, do it the night before your tan. After your tan, you should wait until your first shower to wash your face. Pare down your skincare routine after your tan. Products intended to remove acne, even texture, or brighten the skin will likely remove your tan too. 

It’s normal for your hands and face to fade more quickly because you wash those areas more frequently. A touch-up spray like our James Read Sunless Tanning Mist can help extend the life of your tan on your hands and face.
